Font Families

While looking at a CSS file of some web page, I was curious about its reference to font families. All I cared was individual fonts before. So did some reading on this topic. I'm just putting this down here for my future reference. There are primarily five font categories.

Serif
Sans-Serif
Cursive
Fantasy
Monospace

A Serif font is a letter that has little wiggles in it at the edges and a San-Serif doesn't have them.

Cursive family as the name suggests is really curvy...

Monospace is a font whose letters each occupy the same amount of space. They were initially designed for typewriters.

Convert VCD movies

I had to import couple of movies from a VCD. I use handbrake when I import from DVD. I thought doing that in VCD is also simple. But handbrake doesn't seem to recoganize VCD. Finally I figured out how to do that.

Open VCD in explorer/finder.
Navigate to MPEGAV folder.
Copy the DAT file to another directory and rename it to MPG extension.
Now you can import this file in handbrake and convert to your target format.

Compressing a php page

If your php page is serving a heavy page you can add compression support easily to your page. Just add the below lines at the top of your php page and you have enabled compression. This helps speed up things a bit if your page size 100k or more.

<?php if (substr_count($_SERVER['HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING'], 'gzip')) ob_start("ob_gzhandler"); else ob_start(); ?>

Renaming mysql database

Mysql version 5.1.7 to 5.1.23 had "RENAME TO ". It was later removed because of a finding that it can lead to data loss. The easiest way to achieve this now is to dump the contents of the existing database to another newly created one.

echo "create database new_database;" | mysql -u <username> -p <enter password>

mysqldump --user=<name> --password=<password> <old_database> | mysql -D new_database -p <enter password>

Now you can drop the old database ( after making sure you have all the contents on the new database). Ofcourse you need to recreate the user permissions for the new database.

Save Webpage as image or PDF

Do you want a full snapshot of a webpage you are visiting as an image or as a PDF file? Here is a firefox addon which helps you with that.

I tried it on one of my websites and I'm impressed with the results. Good tool if you ever want to print your website on paper for promotional purposes!
